Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (MI-12) released the following statement on His Holiness Pope Francis’ historic address before a joint meeting of Congress.

“Pope Francis reminded all of us today that we are part of the world community, and as such, our responsibilities to it. 

“He reminded me of the teachings the nuns instilled in me as a child; the distinction between rules and values, the difference between being served and the satisfaction of serving, and the importance of action. 

“His words will be the pillar for my public service career, and it is my hope that today will help remind the Congress that there is far more that unites us than divides us. In the Pope’s words, ‘building a future of freedom requires love of the common good and cooperation in a spirit of…solidarity.’ Let his words of hope, healing, peace, justice, dreams and joy be guiding principles. And may the golden rule – ‘do unto others as you would have them do unto you’ – be the words of wisdom that direct us. 

“It was a day to celebrate, inspire and remember, and as a Catholic woman, one that I will hold in my heart and soul.”
