Dingell Statement on Fuel Economy Regulations
Washington,
March 31, 2020
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (D-MI) released the following statement after the Trump Administration released their final rule on fuel economy regulations: “This proposal takes us in the wrong direction for every key metric for this industry, and causes serious and detrimental harm to an industry that needs certainty. The Administration’s inability to work with all stakeholders to develop a consensus proposal will cause more uncertainty and chaos for an industry recently turned on its head by the COVID-19 epidemic. “We need one national program for fuel economy that increases targets year-over-year and delivers on the twin goals of giving the industry certainty while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This would have been achievable if we brought everyone to the table to find a solution all stakeholders could agree to. Instead, the final rule takes us in the opposite direction and only promises more litigation and uncertainty. The auto industry is as fragile as it’s ever been and this moment only contributes to further volatility. “Around the world, countries are setting aggressive standards. If the United States is to be competitive, we have to stay at the forefront of innovation and technology, which will help us transition to the next generation of more fuel efficient vehicles. Consumers and automakers need policies that not only supports improvements in fuel economy but also supports infrastructure to drive us forward. We need this to happen here, and we need leadership and clear expectations from the Administration.” In Congress, Dingell is a leader in setting one national fuel economy standard and bringing all sides together to craft a rule that works for the auto industry, states, environmental stakeholders, and regulators. |
