Coronavirus update: May 8, 2020

Here is an update for May 8th

Thought of the day: It’s Friday, another week done with.

Unemployment at the highest since the Great Depression. The numbers today are deeply concerning. We need to look at these numbers and ask questions and look at other programs to help. One proposed option being considered by some is the Pay Check Guarantee Act that has support from progressive and conservatives. It would guarantee paychecks for hardworking men and women, and protect businesses. You can learn more about the proposal here

Governor Whitmer has extended the state's stay-home order through May 28 in a Thursday executive order that also lifted some restrictions on manufacturing facilities. This will resume on Monday. The governor also released the MI Safe Start Plan, a guide for the gradual reopening of the state. We’re on stage 3 currently. Governor Whitmer is doing what’s right and she’s taking things slow. Caution, smarts, and following the data is most important here.
A prominent research group at Harvard says the U.S. should be doing more than 900,000 tests per day — a big jump from its previous projection. Its director says that's because modeling shows the outbreak in the U.S. is worse than projected earlier. Testing is what's allowed country's like South Korea and Germany to slowly get things back to normal. Our governors are still scrambling to get the tests they need. We need a massive American effort to up our testing.

If you’re in the need for a good smile, I came across this great video of the Ann Arbor Fire Department answering a different type of call. Even in times of pandemic, our first responders have a heart and support everyone. Who cannot find a smile for this. It put a smile on my face and you can check it out here
