Tlaib, Dingell Statement on Reopening of Beaumont Hospital in Wayne

WAYNE, MI – Today, Congresswomen Tlaib (MI-13) and Dingell (MI-12) released the following statement regarding the reopening of Beaumont Hospital in Wayne: “We were alarmed to learn that Beaumont Health had decided to close Beaumont Hospital during the deadliest pandemic our nation has seen in over a century and amid the announcement it suffered $278.4 million net income loss in the first quarter of this year. To have them reopen this crucial healthcare facility today is laudable, both for the difference it will make for our hard-hit communities across Wayne County and the difference it will make for the employees its closure would have left in dire straits in an already challenging time. “Americans across the country are stepping up to help one another for the common good. Beaumont Health’s reopening of this hospital is a step toward doing the same—but not enough if they don’t work closely with the brave frontline workers who will be crucial in keeping its doors open and patients cared for, including cleaning crew, nurses, etc. in a meaningful and transparent way. It is our sincere hope they do. We will continue to monitor this situation to try and help ensure they do,” the lawmakers said. Tlaib and Dingell previously urged Beaumont Health to reopen Beaumont Hospital in Wayne in a letter to CEO John Fox, expressing deep concerns heard from staff and community members that the closure of Beaumont Wayne Hospital would have a negative impact on the region during the COVID-19 crisis. Their first letter can be read here. The letter in which Tlaib and Dingell asked a series of questions, including if Beaumont employees were entitled to hazardous duty pay, can be read here. |
