Coronavirus update: May 26, 2020

Here is an update for May 26th.
Thought of the day: "With the new day comes new strength and new thoughts.” — Eleanor Roosevelt Tomorrow at 5:30pm, I will hold a coronavirus telephone town hall to answer your questions on COVID-19. As our state enters new phases for reopening, it’s important to know what those steps look like, what’s being done to keep everyone safe, and legislation being worked on to provide relief. You can sign up here to join live, or listen in on my Facebook page. Over the weekend, Congress received a report from the Trump Administration outlining their national testing strategy. This strategy falls short of the testing capacity health experts say we need and dumps the burden of responsibility onto the states. This strategy still forces states to compete with each other to procure vital supplies to administer tests from the private market. We still need clear explanations for how targets were set, how they will be met and what will be done if they are not. Testing, testing, testing still remains what will allow us to slowly get things back to normal. I return to DC tonight for two days of voting. I have multiple priorities. One is to ensure that those that need help continue to get help. And that we get critical support to State and local governments. I am hearing from so many mayors and local residents about their need for help. We also have to ensure we have enough funding for unemployment insurance, PPP and emergency disaster loans. Many are slowly returning to their jobs. So many issues as this happens. Do they have a job, and child care? Are working conditions safe? What about pre-existing conditions? The reality remains, COVID is still here, people are trying to stay safe, what are processes for quarantine, how do you trace, how do you test, how do you motivate people to follow the safety protocols? These are hard, complex, issues and addressing them must be led by our ability to properly test. Team Dingell is here seven days a week and wants to listen and help. It isn’t as smooth as we want on some issues, but we will never stop fighting for you. Call our office at 313-278-2936 or contact us through Facebook or our webpage.
