Dingell Statement on the United States Surpassing 100,000 COVID-19 Related Deaths

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (D-MI) released the following statement on the United States surpassing 100,000 COVID-19 related deaths:

“Today marks a very sad milestone for our country as now 100,000 Americans have died related to coronavirus. Families, friends and loved ones lost forever. Giants of our community and essential workers who put their lives at risk to check us out at the grocery store and healthcare workers.

“Michigan has been hit particularly hard. With over 5,000 deaths in the state, we all know someone who has been touched and hurt by this virus. This is why we must follow the advice of scientists. Wear a mask, maintain distance, and frequently wash your hands and surfaces. The spread is still happening. Taking these small steps is about grandparents; parents of children with cancer, diabetes, asthma; people with compromised immune systems; and even the healthy. I’ve lost friends who were big, strong, and healthy. No one is safe. We have a shared responsibility to stop the virus.

“On Monday, we paused to memorialize the Americans who lost their lives serving our nation. Over the four years of World War II, 400,000 Americans died. In just four months, we are a quarter of the way there because of COVID-19. This isn’t a good day and reminds us how serious this virus is.

“Today, take time to remember, we cannot forget them and not celebrate their lives. We need to keep their spirit in our hearts and souls, and in their honor do all we can to prevent more lost.”
