Dingell Statement on Court Order to Stop Operations on Line 5

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (D-MI) released the following statement after Ingham County Circuit Court Judge James S. Jamo granted Attorney General Dana Nessel’s motion for a temporary restraining order requiring Enbridge Energy to cease all transport operations of its Line 5:

“It’s critical that Line 5 is shut down while we gather all the information and ensure safety,” said Dingell. “It’s downright reckless that Enbridge made the decision to reopen the pipeline with unanswered questions about how the anchor support was damaged and the safety of the dual pipeline. Our priority is the safety of the Great Lakes and I take this matter very seriously. We must know what happened and we must know the operation of Line 5 through the Straits of Mackinac is safe.”

On Wednesday, Dingell led the Michigan Democratic Congressional Delegation in pressing US Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao to stop full operation of Enbridge’s Line 5 down until a full investigation is completed and the dual pipeline is deemed safe. The lawmakers sought answers to a number of specific questions about the incident and the safety of the pipeline.
