Dingell Update: June 2nd

Here is an update for July 2nd.

Thought of the day: “Our greatness has always come from people who expect nothing and take nothing for granted - folks who work hard for what they have, then reach back and help others after them.” — Michelle Obama

On Wednesday, Michigan reported 262 new COVID-19 cases and 4 deaths related to COVID-19. Last month, the number of COVID cases increased in June by 50%. Remember the importance of wearing masks, practicing  physical distancing, wash your hands frequently, (carry hand sanitizer when out) and be smart. If out, please be very, very careful. Bars in Michigan have contributed to our state’s increased number.

The latest unemployment numbers were released today. For the month of June, the country added 4.8 million jobs and unemployment dropped to 11%. This is good news on the surface, but it’s important to remember that millions of working men and women are still unemployed and worried. We should all worry about those still struggling. We continue to work with hose that need help and If you need to file for unemployment, or know anyone who needs to, please visit here. You can also call our office for help at 313-278-2936.

Yesterday, Beaumont announced they developed a COVID-19 test that can give results in 45 minutes. This is great news and will be crucial for helping us track the virus as the number of positive cases in Michigan and the entire nation has increased. We will provide you an update when this test is made available to be used by the public.

Governor Whitmer ordered indoor bar service in Southeast Michigan closed. This was important because we know crowds at them have contributed to increase cases in Michigan and goes with the recommendations of Dr. Fauci who said going to bars is not a good idea. Earlier this week, a bar in Oakland County announced that three people who visited their location tested positive for COVID-19. And everyone should know the story of Harper Bar in East Lansing which was at a count of 138 of positive COVID cases of people who had been there. We just have to be smart.

The House approved the Infrastructure Bill yesterday to rebuild America’s infrastructure, create millions of jobs, take strong action on the climate crisis, and address disparities in urban, suburban, and rural communities across our country. It will help rebuild the U.S. and protect our wildlife. Under the Moving Forward Act, updates and repairs to Michigan’s highways and transit is estimated to receive over $8.7 billion. The Moving Forward Act not only addresses transportation infrastructure, but also school, housing, health care, water and energy infrastructure, as well as delivers high-speed broadband internet access to all parts of the country.

We hope everyone has a good, relaxing 4th of July weekend! We will be back on Monday with more updates and news.
