Dingell update: August 5

Here is an update for August 5th.

Thought of the day: “Plan ahead: It wasn’t raining when Noah built the ark.” — Richard Cushing

Yesterday, Michigan reported 664 new COVID-19 cases and 8 deaths related to the virus. Nationwide, over 51,000 new cases were reported. This continued uptick in cases comes as the CDC reports hospitalization rates have begun to increase in recent weeks. The increase in hospitalizations is what many of us feared would happen because states reopened too soon. This virus can hurt the strongest of us. Please wear your mask, practice physical distancing, and do what’s best for the safety of our communities.

Negotiations continue among Speaker Pelosi, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, the White House, and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin. People need relief now. We are seeing it in the states, especially in Michigan. Enhanced unemployment benefits have expired, people are worried about putting food on their table, and states need federal money to fund vital state services. This is why the House passed the Heroes Act months ago. We saw this moment coming, we knew the American people needed us to act.

There are many pharmaceutical companies working on a COVID vaccine. Pharmaceutical company Novavax announced the vaccine they’re working on generated a promising immune response in an early stage clinical trial. If you remember, last month we also reported that pharmaceutical company Moderna generated similar results with their vaccine trials. We will provide updates as we learn more on any vaccine news.

Next Wednesday at 6:00pm, I invite you to join me and housing experts for a conversation on Michigan’s eviction ban, affordable housing, and what steps are being taken to ensure you and your family have a home to stay in during the pandemic. This conversation is so important to thousands of Michiganders. You or someone you know who has questions should RSVP by clicking the image below.
Team Dingell is here seven days a week and wants to listen and help. It isn’t as smooth as we want on some issues, but we will never stop fighting for you. Call our office at 313-278-2936 or contact us through Facebook or our webpage.
