Dingell Update: August 7, 2020

Here is an update for August 7.
Thought of the day: “One of the most important things you can do on this earth is to let people know they are not alone.” - Shannon L. Alder Yesterday, Michigan reported 772 new COVID-19 cases and 26 deaths related to the virus. This is a large increase in both deaths and cases from previous days and weeks. Nationally, we saw an increase in cases as well. This is real, its still spreading and we need to invest in testing, contact tracing, and measures to stop the spread. In Georgia, two students were suspended for posting pictures of crowded, packed hallways where only a few students were wearing masks. This is dangerous for so many reasons. The start of school is always a time of nerves and excitement and this year those emotions are to the extreme. I hear the concerns from teachers, parents, students, education support staff and administrators whether school returns in person, online, or a hybrid. We all must work together to find a solution that is safe, works for families, and keeps students on a path to success. Governor Whitmer signed an executive order requiring face coverings to be worn in all child-care centers and camps. This order comes after 53 confirmed COVID cases were traced to a Gladwin-area summer camp. Below are the requirements for the Governor’s new order: • All staff and children ages 2 and up to wear a face covering on a school bus or other transportation. • All staff and children ages 4 and up must wear a face covering in all indoor common spaces. • All staff and all children 12 and older are required to wear a face covering when in classrooms, homes, cabins, or similar indoor small-group settings. • All children ages 2 and up wear face coverings when indoors. Next Wednesday at 6:00pm, I invite you to join me and housing experts for a conversation on affordable housing and what steps are being taken to ensure you and your family have a home to stay in during the pandemic. This conversation is so important to thousands of Michiganders. You or someone you know who has questions should RSVP by clicking the image below. New information becomes available every day. Below is a list of resources and information that can be helpful during this time. Please share this information with your family, friends, and colleagues. Remember, stay home, stay safe, save lives.
