Dingell Update: August 12

Here is an update for August 12th.

Thought of the day: “When we give cheerfully and accept gratefully, everyone is blessed.” ― Maya Angelou

Yesterday, Michigan reported 796 new COVID-19 cases and seven deaths related to the virus. Nationwide, we reported over 54,000 cases yesterday — states like Florida, Texas, and California continue to be hot zones. Compared to those states, Michigan has done a much better job at containing the virus, but that doesn’t mean it is gone. The virus spreads easily and if we stop treating this virus seriously, it will come back.

Tonight at 6:00 pm, I invite you to join me and housing experts for a conversation on affordable housing and what steps are being taken to ensure you and your family have a home to stay in during the pandemic. This conversation is so important to thousands of Michiganders. You or someone you know who has questions should RSVP by clicking the image below.

There are a lot of questions around the President’s most recent executive order to provide an additional $400 to people looking for unemployment. Unfortunately for states, it will be a real challenge to get this up and running quickly. Many experts are suggesting payments won’t come for weeks and that the President’s executive order does not provide enough funding to last for an extended period of time. Both Democrats and Republicans must come to the table and pass legislation that will provide a long-term solution to the unemployment crisis. People need relief.

This morning, I visited the Ann Arbor Fisher House. Fisher House is designed to be a home away from home for families of Veterans or active personal while their loved ones receive care at military hospitals and VA hospitals around the country. The visit was to check in on how the newly built facility is holding up during COVID. Being able to visit an operating Fisher House in Ann Arbor was the results of multiple caring groups and organizations. It will help families during some of the most difficult times in their lives. We look forward to a second Fisher House at the Detroit VA.
Members of the House, led by Speaker Pelosi, have begun to reach out to the Postmaster General regarding the Postal Services recent operational changes that have exacerbated a dramatic increase in delayed and undelivered mail. The United States Postal Service is a pillar of our American Democracy, it keeps loved ones in touch, delivers life-saving medications, and connects communities. We need transparency, and the American people need to know why the Postmaster General decided to significantly restructure the Postal Service.
