DEARBORN, MI – Today, Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (D-MI) issued the following statement after General Motors announced they are withdrawing from litigation regarding preemption of fuel economy standards:
"General Motors did the right thing today by removing their name from this misguided lawsuit. It's time for other automakers to do the same. As I've always said, this issue should never have been litigated in the courts which has only resulted in uncertainty and delay. We need all stakeholders to come to the table and work on a path forward, which includes automakers, the incoming Administration, California, and the environmental community. The need for one national program for fuel economy, which increases targets year-over-year and delivers on the twin goals of giving the industry certainty while reducing greenhouse gas emissions, remains as urgent as ever. Fortunately, we don’t need to start from scratch. There is an existing framework which represents the views of automakers and California which represents a template for moving forward.”
