DINGELL & DPCC COCHAIRS: PROTECTING CAPITOL PRESS CORPS MUST BE PART OF SECURITY REVIEWCartwright, Dingell, Lieu, Neguse: Free Press is Foundational to Democracy and Must be Protected
Washington,
January 8, 2021
(Washington, DC) – Democratic Policy and Communications Committee (DPCC) Cochairs Debbie Dingell (MI-12), Matt Cartwright (PA-8), Ted Lieu (CA-33) and Joe Neguse (CO-2) released the following statement today: “The work of journalists who covered the insurrection at our nation’s Capitol Building Wednesday was nothing short of heroic. Under extreme duress and with their own personal safety threatened, journalists continued their vital mission of informing the American people. So much of what we know and will continue to learn about the tragedy this week is only possible because of them. “Just as President Trump incited the violence against our Capitol Wednesday, he and some of his allies have repeatedly and recklessly attacked the press for years, inciting threats targeted specifically at journalists. As we move forward with responding to the security failures that allowed this outrage to happen, and what must be done to prevent it from ever happening again, addressing the specific security needs of and unique threats against journalists who work in our Capitol Building - while also maintaining the access they need to keep the American public informed - must be part of the conversation. “A free press is foundational to our Democracy, and it must be protected.” ### |
