Dingell, Tokuda, Salinas Introduce Resolution Condemning Sexual Violence

Representatives Debbie Dingell (MI-06), Jill Tokuda (HI-02), and Andrea Salinas (OR-06), on Friday - International Women's Day - introduced a Resolution condemning sexual violence against all women across the globe, especially in times of conflict and as a weapon of war.

“Sexual violence against women and girls is widespread and devastating, and we are seeing accounts of horrific violence, abuse, and rape as a weapon of war emerging from conflicts across the world,” Dingell said. “The use of sexual violence against women anywhere, by anyone must be condemned unequivocally, and we cannot turn a blind eye to or deny the existence of gender-based violence in international conflict. We cannot be shamed into being silent. We must speak up and speak out. We all have a responsibility to do more to protect women from violence and sexual abuse as a tool of war, and support survivors.”

“It is unconscionable that women across the world continue to be targets of sexual violence in war and conflict,” said Tokuda. “We cannot be idle about this cruel reality, especially as conflicts raging across the world undo the progress we have made in empowering and protecting the rights of women. These crimes are a stain on our collective humanity. On International Women’s Day, the United States must recommit itself to speak and act with moral clarity in putting an end to gender-based violence in conflict.”

“On International Women’s Day, I join my colleagues in condemning sexual and gender-based violence both here at home and around the world,” said Salinas. “The sad reality is that violence against women and girls is still routinely committed, especially during times of conflict. Today and every day, we must amplify the voices of survivors and call out these atrocities wherever we see them. We must continue working to put an end to violence in all its forms.”

The resolution is co-sponsored by Representatives Greg Casar, Lloyd Doggett, Adriano Espaillat, John Garamendi, Sylvia Garcia, Dan Goldman, Raul Grijalva, Pramila Jayapal, Barbara Lee, Summer Lee, Mike Levin, Jim McGovern, Gwen Moore, Eleanor Holmes Norton, Adam Schiff, Melanie Stansbury, Shri Thanedar, Juan Vargas, and Susan Wild.
