Dingell Statement Condemning Russian Conviction of Evan Gershkovich
ANN ARBOR, Mich.,
July 19, 2024
Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (MI-06) today released the following statement on the news that Evan Gershkovich was found guilty of espionage by a Russian court.
"I strongly condemn the Russian conviction of Evan Gershkovich and reaffirm my commitment to the release of Evan Gershkovich and Paul Whelan. Both men have been wrongfully imprisoned in Russia for too long and have received wrongful convictions, resulting in years-long prison sentences for crimes they did not commit. Paul was a resident of Novi in my district before the Russians took him. His parents are also constituents who live in Manchester and never stop working, hoping, and praying for his return. I continue to reassure his family that he will not be forgotten, and I wish to do the same for Evan’s family because I know their pain. I am currently attending the Aspen Security Forum with Secretary Anthony Blinken and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and plan to speak with them as soon as possible. I will continue to work alongside my colleagues in Congress, the Biden-Harris Administration, and everyone else working diligently to end this nightmare and bring Evan and Paul home." |
