Dingell Announces $1.9 Million for Great Lakes Environmental Laboratory in Ann Arbor

Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (MI-06) today announced the Great Lakes Environmental Laboratory (GLERL) in Ann Arbor received $1,900,000 in Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding to support the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) efforts to investigate the Great Lakes’ impact on climate and weather.

“The Ann Arbor Great Lakes Environmental Laboratory is conducting critical research to enable us to better understand how the Great Lakes impact weather, and how they are impacted by climate change,” Dingell said. “This funding, made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, will support this important work, and ensure we have the resources and information necessary to protect the Great Lakes, the many species they contain, and their surrounding communities.”

Specifically, the Great Lakes Environmental Laboratory received $1,900,000 to:

  1. Deploy autonomous underwater data collection systems in the Great Lakes to collect critical data on ice formation, zooplankton, fish and water quality in early winter and in under-ice operations.
  2. Expand the number of moored heat sensors in Lake Michigan, Lake Huron and Lake Superior.
