Dingell Statement on Tariffs on Canada and Mexico
Washington,
March 4, 2025
Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (MI-06) today released the following statement on the White House announcement of 25% across-the-board tariffs on Canada and Mexico. “We need to advance trade policies that strengthen our economy and manufacturing and support the auto industry. As I’ve said before, tariffs are a tool in the toolbox, but they must be strategic and actually benefit working people and protect American jobs. If implemented recklessly, they risk undercutting our domestic auto industry who have invested billions in the U.S. — raising costs, stifling investment, and giving foreign competitors like China the upper hand in our own market. “We also need to bring our supply chains back to this country by investing in manufacturing, steel capacity, and semiconductors. Likewise, a majority of our medicine is being produced offshore – it is critical that we also bring pharmaceutical manufacturing back to this country. This isn’t just an economic security issue — it’s a national security issue. “I want to work with this administration, manufacturers, suppliers, labor unions, and all stakeholders, but we need a strategic approach to ensure our workforce and manufacturing industries are supported. Our domestic manufacturers need time to make adjustments to their supply chains and investments, and these actions by the Trump Administration create uncertainty that will hurt workers and consumers. With this abrupt announcement of across-the-board tariffs on Canada and Mexico, instead of punishing those trying to undermine us, we’re punishing our allies and our workers. Our domestic auto industry is closely linked with North America, but Canada and Mexico must be treated as two separate countries, and we need to take a hard look at USMCA. “We cannot risk unintended consequences, which will ultimately hurt American workers, disrupt supply chains, raise costs for consumers, and give our industry away to our competitors.” |
