Dingell Statement on Firing of DHS Secretary Noem

Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (MI-06) today released the following statement in response to President Trump’s announcement regarding the firing of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

“President Trump’s announcement today that he plans to replace Secretary Kristi Noem by the end of the month is long overdue. For months, I’ve called on the administration to remove her from her position since her leadership put politics ahead of the safety, rights, and trust of the American people.

“Secretary Noem’s tenure at the Department of Homeland Security was deeply troubling and marked by repeated controversies—from questions about her department’s oversight, to her decisions to spend federal dollars for personal gain. Most concerning of all, two Americans were shot and killed in Minnesota by immigration enforcement agents under her command this year. It is clear she was not fit to lead an agency with such immense responsibility.

“But replacing one official does not fix the deeper problems. I hope the new leadership of the Department of Homeland Security will implement strong reforms that rein in ICE agents and that they understand the serious responsibility of this agency. The American people deserve leadership at DHS that respects the law, protects civil liberties, and is held accountable.”
