Dingell Statement on President Trump’s Budget Request
Washington, DC,
May 23, 2017
U.S. Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (MI-12) today released the following statement on President Trump’s 2018 budget request. “The budget submitted today does not reflect the values of American communities. President Trump’s proposal is an assault on things that have always been a priority for the American people – investments in children and working families, infrastructure and innovation, healthcare and education, which help our families succeed and keep our nation competitive. “By cutting billions from nondefense services, including programs like Medicaid, student aid and Meals on Wheels, this budget jeopardizes critical programs that help working families get ahead when times are tough – and frankly keep seniors alive – all while cutting taxes for the wealthiest and big corporations. This is not who we are. “This budget also fails to recognize our responsibility as stewards of our natural resources to protect our land and water for future generations. By virtually eliminating funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative – the single most successful program cleaning up toxic pollution and combatting invasive species – this budget jeopardizes the Great Lakes ecosystem, jobs and our way of life. It is also disappointing that the President is moving forward with cuts that jeopardize current operations and jobs at the EPA National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Lab in Ann Arbor, which does critical work to reduce vehicle emissions and ensure the U.S. stays at the forefront of innovation. “Fortunately, the President doesn’t have the final say on the budget, Congress does. And it is the belief of most that this proposal is dead on arrival – right where it belongs. I will be fighting tooth and nail with my colleagues to protect vital programs our children, families, communities and environment depend upon.” |
