MLive: Dingell pushing autonomous vehicle regulation bill in Congress

MLive

U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell, D-Dearborn, is backing legislation that supports the development of autonomous vehicles.

The bill is being reviewed by the House Energy and Commerce committee.

Dingell said in a statement the bi-partisan draft legislation was approved unanimously by the House Energy and Commerce Digital Commerce and Consumer Protection Subcommittee on Wednesday, July 19.

The legislation is intended to establish a framework of regulations of autonomous and connected vehicles.

"With this legislation, we have the opportunity to reshape American manufacturing for decades to come," Dingell said in the statement.

"If we want the next great wave of manufacturing and (research and development) to take place in this country as opposed to overseas, then we need to have a strong but flexible regulatory framework for automated vehicles that always puts safety first."

The regulatory bill being considered in Washington includes safety provisions, including submission of safety assessment certifications; written cybersecurity plans and the initiation of standards spearheaded by the National Highway Traffic Safety.

"We want the United States to remain in the driver's seat, and today's draft bill is a major step in the right direction," Dingell said in the statement. "I look forward to continuing our work toward introducing bipartisan, consensus legislation."
