TRENTON, MI – Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (MI-12) issued the following statement after the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the southern portion of the McLouth Steel site is being added to the Superfund Program, making it eligible for federal support for the cleanup:
“This is a step forward in the long process of cleaning up the McLouth steel site. Listing the southern portion as a Superfund Site will help EPA and EGLE work together to ensure the site is safely cleaned up, and look towards the future of the site. I’ve said all along our top priority must be ensuring that the site is properly cleaned up and the safety of Trenton and Downriver communities is protected.
"There is still a long road ahead of us and it is critical federal, state, local officials, the community, and private industry partners keep working together. We have been talking for more than two decades. The site needs to be cleaned up, the plant taken down, the ground and water cleaned up and protected. This EPA listing is an important step in the process.”
