Dingell Statement on House Denouncing Practice of Female Genital Mutilation
Washington,
May 20, 2019
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (MI-12) released the following statement on the House denouncing female genital mutilation. Dingell is a co-sponsor of the resolution. “Female genital mutilation is an extreme and inhumane form of gender-based violence. Not only is this practice a public health threat, it also violates the human rights of women and girls in our communities and across the world. This resolution is an important step in recognizing this problem, but Congress must come together to strengthen our laws to end this practice at home. The recent court ruling by a judge in Michigan shows why we need stronger laws to prosecute those who commit this terrible act. Congress must update the current law so we can better support the woman and girls who have been impacted.” |
