Coronavirus update: May 30, 2020

Here is an update for May 30th.

Thought of the day:
“Take the time to do what you love to do this weekend.” — Catherine Pulsifer

Yesterday, Michigan reported 607 new COVID-19 cases and 34 COVID-19 related deaths. The number of cases has increased from the day before. This virus is still very real and shows we must be smart about the slow reopening process.

We all have to make sure we’re being proactive against scams out there trying to steal people’s personal information. The Unemployment Insurance Agency provided Michigan consumers with resources to help protect against unemployment identity theft and steps to take if they are victim. We were recently warned of attempts by criminals to file imposter claims as part of an international criminal ring reported by the U.S. Secret Service (USSS) to exploit the COVID-19 crisis and commit large-scale fraud against state unemployment programs across the country. No personal information of Michiganders has been stolen at this time.
.
The Governor’s Office announced the Michigan tax foreclosure deadline has been extended. Residents now have until June 29 to pay back taxes on their properties to avoid foreclosure.

The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) has launched a new online COVID-19 Workplace Safety site – Michigan.gov/COVIDWorkplaceSafety The site provides guidance and a toolkit of resources to keep workplaces safe as sectors of the state’s economy reopen. With the slow reopening underway, worker safety must come first.

Yesterday, the American Legion and the Downriver Mutual Aid operated a food distribution service for those in need. During this time, people still need support and help. Being able to afford food remains a major issue for those who are out of work, have had their hours reduced, or have a family to feed. When help is needed, our veterans and firefighters are always reliable.
