Coronavirus update: May 31st

Here is an update for May 31st.

Thought of the day: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” — Dr. Martin Luther King

Sunday is supposed to be a day of rest. Our country is anything but at rest.

These are turbulent times, our nation was already on edge, afraid, anxious, hurting, suffering. And COVID has not disappeared. We must all be committed at this crossroad in our history, to work to help bridge serious, bitter, troubling, anger that has simmered for years. We must work together to understand, to hear. We are witnessing the language of the unheard. We need to strategize, to act on solutions, and address inequities of many. We are a country hurting. We must work together to help heal us. My thoughts keep coming back to Dr. King, and they are what’s inspiring me. He famously said: ”We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.”

Michigan reported 263 new COVID-19 cases and 57 new COVID-19 deaths on Saturday. This virus is still really real. We cannot forget that.

The FDA and Federal Trade Commission issued warning letters to four companies for promoting and participating in the sale of fraudulent COVID-19 products. There are currently no FDA-approved products to prevent or treat COVID-19. Please make sure you’re being diligent and not letting scammers take advantage of you or your loved ones.

Nursing homes in Michigan account for 1 in 4 COVID-19 related deaths. Seniors in settings like nursing homes are at increased risk of COVID-19. This is a serious problem that must be addressed and requires urgent action. This is why I introduced legislation to provide more funding for individuals to receive home and community-based services. Every American deserves the right to live with dignity in old age.
