Dingell Update: June 1, 2020
Washington,
June 1, 2020
Here is an update for June 1st.
Thought of the day: “We must continue to go forward as one people, as brothers and sisters.” — John Lewis There is strong recognition that George Floyd's death was murder and the anger, rage, anxiety, depression, frustration of years of inaction requires action by all of us. The words of Dr. King remind us: “We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.” This weekend Genesee County Sheriff County Christopher Swanson removed his riot gear and walked with Flint protestors. This simple act showed he understands that many need to know someone is listening. Dr. King told us, "riots are the language of the unheard." Not only do we have to listen but we must act to address real problems. You can watch the video of Christopher Swanson here. We still need to remember that COVID-19 is out there. Too many people aren't keeping physical distance or wearing masks. The month of May saw a drop in COVID-19 cases and deaths, but that doesn’t mean the virus is gone. Michigan saw the total number of COVID-19 cases and deaths drop significantly between May and April. In May, there were 16,018 cases of COVID-19 and 1,702 deaths caused by COVID-19. In April, there were 33,764 cases of COVID-19 and 3,530 deaths caused by COVID-19. We saw progress and the stay at home orders put in place helped. Now that the slow reopening has begun, it’s important we are just as smart. People must continue to still wear masks and practice social distancing wherever they are. FEMA announced that the federal government will distribute non-contact thermometers to support the slow reopening process. The thermometers will be used in accordance with CDC and OSHA guidelines for businesses and employers when identifying potentially sick people. FEMA is coordinating the initial distribution and delivery. Local governments are urged to work with states in making request from FEMA for the thermometers. Requests can be made through the FEMA Resource Request Form process, which is found here. Team Dingell is here seven days a week and wants to listen and help. It isn’t as smooth as we want on some issues, but we will never stop fighting for you. Call our office at 313-278-2936 or contact us through Facebook or our webpage.
