Dingell update: June 4, 2020

Here is an update for June 4th.

Thought of the day: “Each person must live their life as a model for others.” - Rosa Parks

People are speaking out. Injustice remains and the country’s conscious is being roused. This photo, taken yesterday in Westland, speaks to our future. Everyone is big enough to do something. We can all listen more and learn about our nation’s deep disparities – in health care, in housing, equity in education, and in every aspect of life and society. Remember we are one community.

We cannot forget that coronavirus lingers. Michigan reported 17 COVID-19 related deaths and 304 new cases. With protestors making their voices heard and businesses now allowed to service customers inside their shops without an appointment, it’s important we’re still conscious that the virus is out there. The Governor also lifted executive orders that limit hospital capacity, emergency medical services, and the Michigan Department of Health and Human services loosened rules on who can visit patients in certain health care settings. With all that’s going on, please wear a mask, practice social distancing, and wash your hands frequently.

Yesterday, the Senate passed legislation that will improve the Paycheck Protection Program. The legislation was already passed by the House. Small businesses continue to struggle, and it is imperative that deadlines previously set on small businesses to use the Paycheck Protection Program are extended and all resources available are accessible for those who need them. We hope the president signs this legislation as soon as possible.

Pharmaceutical companies are preparing to test their coronavirus vaccines on tens of thousands of people this summer. This process has gained optimism by Dr. Fauci, who believes the US could have hundreds of millions of approved vaccines by 2021. As part of phase-3 of the clinical development process of a vaccine, the pharmaceutical company Moderna will begin giving its COVID-19 vaccine to 30,000 people in the first week of July, according to Dr. Fauci. This is the final stage of development before a vaccine can gain approval by the FDA.
