5G Caucus Co-Chairs Introduce Bipartisan Bill to Promote America's Wireless Leadership

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, U.S. Representatives Debbie Dingell (D-MI), Tim Walberg (R-MI), Bill Johnson (R-OH), and Annie Kuster (D-NH) introduced the Promoting United States Wireless Leadership Act of 2021, a bipartisan bill to enhance America's leadership in the development of wireless standards. The lawmakers all serve as co-chairs of the Congressional 5G Caucus. The legislation reflects the need for a unified approach to pushing back against international competitors like Russia and China to protect U.S. national security, global competitiveness, and cost-effectiveness of wireless communications.

“The policy choices of today will have lasting effects on the global 5G technology development of tomorrow,” said Rep. Dingell. “We need to ensure the United States plays a strong role in leading on international wireless standards as we navigate this increasingly competitive market.”

“It is a strategic imperative that America continues to be on the forefront of wireless innovation,” said Rep. Walberg. “I am delighted to work with my colleagues on this bipartisan effort to prioritize American leadership in 5G and beyond. As China seek to assert influence over our technological future, we need to maintain our competitive edge and ensure future standards are made with America’s economic and security interests in mind.”

“If the United States doesn’t lead on 5G and related wireless technology, someone else – likely China – will. It’s not just an issue of global competitiveness, but also an issue of national security. I’m pleased to introduce this bipartisan legislation with my co-chairs of the Congressional 5G Caucus, and this bill is proof that there are issues where Republicans and Democrats can come together to put American interests first,” said Rep. Johnson.

“Ensuring the United States remains competitive in the development and deployment of 5G technology is critical to the success of our innovation economy,” said Rep. Kuster. “I am pleased to help introduce this bipartisan legislation to promote American competitiveness in setting international wireless standards to ensure that the United States can maintain global leadership in the advancement of 5G technology.”
