Dingell Applauds EPA Reinstatement of California’s Emissions Waiver

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (MI-12) issued the following statement on the decision by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to reinstate California’s waiver authority under the Clean Air Act to set their own tougher greenhouse gas emission standards after the Trump Administration moved to revoke the state’s waiver in 2019:

“Reinstating California’s emission waiver will give the American automotive industry much needed certainty, benefit manufacturers and consumers, and protect our environment. This decision rights the wrongs of a shortsighted policy that sacrificed American leadership in the future of the mobility industry.

“The American automotive industry supports nearly 2 million good-paying American jobs and accounts for approximately 3.5% of the U.S. economy, but the industry is fragile. It needs certainty, not court cases that will last for years and put hardworking Americans out of work.

“With this waiver reinstated, we can tackle the climate crisis, increase public health, and give the U.S. auto industry the certainty it needs long-term. But it will also remain critical, as I have consistently said, that the United States have a national fuel economy and emissions program with one set of standards that increases year over year, while we look to make the ultimate shift toward electrifying the transportation sector.”
