Dingell Statement On New Proposed Corporate Average Fuel Economy Standards

Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (MI-06) released the following statement on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) new proposed corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standards for passenger vehicles and light trucks, which will improve fuel efficiency, lower costs for consumers, and combat climate change.

“I’m encouraged by the new proposed corporate average fuel economy standards that appear to make an effort to align with EPA’s recent emissions standards proposal. I have long said that we need one national program that simultaneously gives the industry certainty while reducing emissions and making fuel economy more efficient. I am pleased the Biden Administration is prioritizing this issue and for their continued commitment to cutting costs for American families, combatting climate change, and creating good-paying American jobs. I look forward to the public comment period and working with this administration and all stakeholders to establish a meaningful final rule. It is important that the final standards keep the American auto industry a global leader, while cutting costs for families, allowing them to go further on a tank of gas.”

The new proposed CAFE standards would require achieving an industry-wide fleet average of 58 miles per gallon for light-duty passenger vehicles and trucks by 2032. The proposal would also align with the Environmental Protection Agency’s recently proposed emissions standards for similar vehicles.
