Dingell Statement on Steel and Aluminum Tariffs

Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (MI-06) released the following statement on the new 25 percent tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.

“We need to advance trade policies that strengthen our economy, support manufacturing, and protect the auto industry. Steel and aluminum are the backbone of American manufacturing, and for generations, strong domestic industries have enabled the United States to lead globally. I welcome efforts to address global overcapacity, which has allowed bad actors, like China, to unfairly flood our markets — harming American workers and businesses.

“Our domestic manufacturing is closely linked with North America, but Canada and Mexico must be treated as two separate countries. Across-the-board tariffs, without time for companies to adjust, risk unintended consequences — hurting American workers, disrupting supply chains, and raising costs for consumers.

“We need to renegotiate USMCA immediately to ensure fair trade practices and prevent our adversaries from undercutting American industry. While some countries are working to dominate the global market at our expense, others are aligning their trade policies with the United States to push back against unfair foreign competition.

“Tariffs are a tool that should be used to rebalance trade relationships, but they must be applied in a way that strengthens manufacturing, without harming the very workers we aim to protect. I urge the Administration to take a measured approach that reinforces our manufacturing sector while recognizing the importance of our alliances with countries that play by the rules.”
