Dingell Demands Answers About Trump Shutting Down EV Chargers at Federal Buildings Across the Country

“Not only is it wasteful to shut down infrastructure the government already owns, but continuing to operate EVs also saves the government money through lower fuel and maintenance costs,” Dingell writes.

Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (MI-06) today sent a letter to President Trump expressing concern and requesting answers about the shutting down of all electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at federal buildings across the country, a decision that undermines previous federal investments in EV infrastructure, raises serious concerns about waste and inefficiency, and threatens our competitiveness in the global automotive industry.

“In a sweeping policy shift, your administration has reportedly directed the closure of approximately 8,000 EV charging ports managed by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA). Additionally, plans are in place to offload EVs from the federal fleet, marking a sharp reversal from the initiatives of the previous administration,” Dingell wrote. “Correspondence from your administration states that all GSA-owned charging stations are now considered “not mission critical” and will be shut down, rendering them inoperable, and some regional offices have already begun decommissioning chargers, with a formal announcement expected soon.”

“GSA manages federal assets, including a fleet of approximately 650,000 vehicles,” Dingell continued. “Under the previous administration, there were plans to procure over 58,000 EVs and install more than 25,000 charging ports. This new directive halts that transition entirely.”

“This decision follows the suspension of the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, an initiative aimed at expanding the nation’s EV charging network. These actions will slow the overall adoption of EVs in the U.S. rather than accelerate it,” Dingell concluded.“Your administration claims to be committed to eliminating waste, fraud, and abuse, but dismantling federal charging stations and offloading the federal EV fleet is fiscally irresponsible. Not only is it wasteful to shut down infrastructure the government already owns, but continuing to operate EVs also saves the government money through lower fuel and maintenance costs compared to internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.”

Dingell requested answers to the following questions by March 7:

  1. Can you confirm whether reports about shutting down GSA-owned charging stations are accurate?
  2. Are GSA-owned charging stations considered “mission critical”? If not, what criteria were used to make the determination that they are “not mission critical”?
  3. How many GSA-owned charging stations currently exist, and how many GSA-owned charging stations are being shuttered?
  4. Will this decision to shut down GSA-owned charging stations impact all federal properties nationwide or will certain regions be disproportionately impacted?
  5. Please provide a list of every GSA-owned charging station slated for shutdown.
  6. Who decided which charging stations would be shut down, and what justification was provided?
  7. How much federal funding has already been invested in GSA-owned charging stations?
  8. How much federal funding has already been invested in the federal EV fleet?
  9. What is the estimated cost to the federal government of removing EVs from the fleet and replacing them with ICE vehicles?
  10. How does the cost of operating an ICE vehicle compare to an EV in terms of fuel, maintenance, and overall efficiency for the federal fleet?
  11. How does shutting down charging stations and eliminating the federal EV fleet result in cost savings for taxpayers? Has a cost-benefit analysis been conducted to support this decision?
