U.S. Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (MI-12) released the following statement after the House of Representatives approved the GOP tax bill, which provides tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations at the expense of working families.

“The American people deserve better than the tax plan that passed the House today. The working men and women I represent deserve a tax plan that puts them first – that provides real relief for childcare expenses and student debt, that protects vital deductions that help families and seniors afford high medical expenses, and that promotes retirement security. Instead, this bill will raise taxes on 36 million working families, while providing a $1.5 trillion tax cut to the wealthy and big corporations who need it least. 

“To add insult to injury, adding $1.5 trillion to the deficit will starve the government of revenue that it needs to pay for critical programs like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid – programs that the American people rely on for health care and a secure retirement and programs that are part of the very fabric of this country. This is unacceptable. I support tax reform that puts working families first, makes our tax code simpler and fairer, and promotes a strong economy, but I will not support a plan that provides tax cuts to the wealthy at the expense of the working families who need it most.”
