The federal Economic Development Administration has awarded a $247,000 grant for the creation of a research center at the former Willow Run plant in Ypsilanti Township.

U.S. Sens. Gary Peters and Debbie Stabenow and U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell, D-Dearborn, announced the grant, which was awarded last week to support the opening of what's being called the Connected and Autonomous Vehicle (CAV) Development Center.

The center is being created in partnership with Ann Arbor SPARK, which supports economic development in the region. The CAV Center will be involved in the testing of wireless technology that allows vehicles and infrastructure to communicate and the development of self-driving cars.
